Power of Materials

You saw the call for project photos on the Architectural Systems (ASI) Facebook and Twitter pages and in our e-mail blasts. It was so exciting to view all the entries for the first-ever Power of Materials contest pouring in; this will be the first of many photo contests! Now that the finalists have been chosen, Materialista® can share some of the most inspiring spaces that feature ASI’s diverse range of interior finishes.

These entries incorporated ASI materials that created a memorable experience.

Whether they used natural or simulated hardwoods, Crystallized Glass Stone, decorative wall panels and more, I selected these projects for their success in evoking a mood and defining a sense of place.

While I’ve chosen just a handful of projects that we were proud to collaborate with these designers on, you can see more examples of ASI’s internationally curated products highlighted in our gallery of global projects on the website or in the Trend Tawk Continuing Education course.

Now, the announcement you’ve been waiting for! We are happy to present FirstMark Capital in New York, NY, designed by Kathleen Peragine, president, Concept 3D, as the winner of The Power of Materials contest. Kathleen will not only take home an iPad, she was also selected for the next Featured Project e-mail from ASI, where you’ll get the full story.

Which project is your favorite? I know it’s tough to decide!

FirstMark Capital – Winner!
New York, NY
Concept 3D

Materials used: Anodized Aluminum Laminates - DSDLM006, European Hardwood Collection - FLHTG118, Shimmer® Vinyl Collection - FLAVI658 and Ecotexture® Wood Panels - WPCPI077.

For a venture capitalist firm that specializes in the latest internet technology, Peragine designed their office to feel like an old New York loft space, bringing nature into the city setting by providing areas that are conducive to relaxation and conversation with the innovative use of materials and five Japanese trees! This project showcases a range of ASI products, including European Hardwood flooring throughout, Ecotexture® Panels in the elevator lobby, and the fantastic light fixtures made from Anodized Aluminum laminates also applied on the cabinets, all reinforcing the juxtaposition of cool and warm elements.

Other noteworthy submissions include:

Upper West Side Residence
New York, NY
Judith Angel Interior Design

Material used: ASI Hardwood Flooring IV - FLKRA074

Working with an artistic couple that travels globally, Angel renovated their eat-in kitchen, creating a warmer, more comfortable environment. In addition to being an easy-to-maintain and cost-effective option, ASI’s engineered hardwood in Tigerwood complemented the owners’ worldly collectables and reflected their color sensibility and talents.

Nix’s Mate at the Hilton Hotel
Boston, MA
Michael Nadeau, PBD Events

Material used: Eco-Tech™ Resilient Floating Floor - FLRGB006

Acting as the perfect solution to cover an existing terrazzo floor in a landmark building, Nadeau chose Eco-Tech™ Resilient Floating Floor to quickly update the restaurant with a simulated hardwood-look in luxury vinyl, designed for high-traffic environments.

“I am going to be using Eco-Tech™ in my upcoming projects too,” states Nadeau.

Perry Street Residence
New York, NY
Preston T. Phillips, Architect

preston phillips
Material used: Crystallized Glass Stone Collection - FLHSN028, FLSTH001

Phillips set a goal: select the fewest number of materials for multiple uses so that his composition was harmonious and functional. Check out how many uses he got out of Crystallized Glass Stone! It was used as flooring for the long entrance gallery (acting as a monolithic contrast against the client’s contemporary art collection), in the kitchen, master bath, guest bath and powder room. It was also used as a border to soften a black walnut floor in the living and dining rooms. And finally, it was used as a counter top and backsplash in the kitchen, as bathroom sinks with invisible drains, the master tub surround and in the shower. Wow!

Student Entry, Retail Concept
Tashia Tucker, Drexel Univ. 3rd yr. grad student

Materials used: ASI Eco-Porcelain ll  - FLCCD701, Metro Tile Collection - DSADF233

We were thrilled to receive an entry from a design student, prompting ASI to create a student category for our next photo contest! This concept for up and coming designer Silvio Liu’s retail space in Philadelphia draws inspiration from its contrasting surroundings in the city (a trend?), mixing materials such as textured porcelain and metallic wall tiles.

Inspired by the E.L. James trilogy 50 Shades of Grey, an adult playroom was developed that literally used 50 different shades of the signature color.

“I immediately contacted ASI, who not only had what I was looking for, but had it available in GREY! It was fate! The material is so gorgeous that everyone who steps in the room is mesmerized by it.  My experience working with ASI was top notch. The service was beyond anything I've ever experienced.” - Diane Guariglia, principal, Dyfari Interiors

Hampton Designer Showhouse, Watermill, NY

You don’t need a contest to share your latest, greatest projects! Submit photos year-round with a statement that explains how the material helped you realize your vision and you’ll receive our recognition along with a small gift. We love to continue to provide ideas and inspiration!

I hope Kathleen enjoys her new iPad and I look forward to the next Power of Materials contest!
