A Material Girl dishes on what's new, what's now and WHAT'S NEXT® in interior finishes.

Spreading the Love this February

spreadtheloveWe’re celebrating Valentine’s Day our own way. We’ve asked some designers who we worked with this month what kind of materials they love.

 trends

It started at Surfaces when Victoria Redshaw of Scarlet Opus stopped by our booth during her Speeding Trend Tour, where Trends for 2012 were highlighted. She told her audience that she has a huge creative crush on our collections. We were flattered. ASI was credited for our on-trend, unusal and relevant products. Thanks Victoria!

In our showroom, we collaborate with the most creative designers in the world on their projects. Ji Kim, principal, UnSPACE, and Stefanie Galioto, design manager, Town Sports International, paid us a visit and shared which ASI materials they love!

Inspired by Art

We are trained trend trackers just like our design clients. To that end, we are always looking for inspiration both inside and outside our industry. When we’re not at interiors shows or working in the showroom, you can often find us in museums where we find inspiration from the art world, as trends in art often affect fashion and design.

Over the past couple of months, our team visited a number of exhibitions throughout New York. We’ve compiled our favorites here for your enjoyment. Let us know if you have visited an exhibition that stuck with you, especially if it had an impact on your design.

art1Max Hart, Web Content Manager: At the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY, the exhibit Extreme Materials 2, an encore to the popular debut show from 2006, highlights both everyday and esoteric materials – soap, packing tape, bicycle parts, preserved insects, pencils, which were used to create unusual works of art. The show featured a portrait relief crafted from painted screws, a dress made from condoms, and a Byzantine mosaic recreated in breakfast cereal. These objects remind us that art can be found in everything around us.

Nancy Jackson, President: The Jewish Museum of New York hosted a show called Collecting Matisse and the Modern Masters. It featured the private collection of two sisters: Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta Cone, who befriended contemporary artists from the early 20th century. This is known as one of the world’s greatest art collections. This exhibition, on loan from The Baltimore Museum of Art, featured the famous masters Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin, van Gogh, Cezanne and others.

Another gem of an exhibit (pardon the pun) was Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels featured at the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.

art4

Beyond wanting every piece, it was fascinating to see the interpretation of trends over a century of creativity. Jewelry was shown as another artistic endeavor, creating something far greater than the sum of its parts.

It was a fantastic opportunity to see the jewels in the context of a decorative art and design disciplines and to fantasize about which pieces would work best with my wardrobe!

Nancy Jackson & Larissa Nahari, Director of Marketing: Both Nancy and Larissa were one of the 661,000+ people who visited Savage Beauty – the Met’s exhibition that honored the late Alexander McQueen.

art3

As members of the museum, (lucky them) they were able to skip the massive line.

Savage Beauty was undoubtedly one of the most celebrated exhibitions in New York last year. It highlighted the extraordinary artistic contributions by an artist whose medium of expression was fashion. The exhibit showcased over one hundred ensembles and many signature designs.

“You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.” —Alexander McQueen

art5George Reddick, Executive Assistant: When I first moved to the area near the Brooklyn Museum in the early 2000s, I became used to the blue partitions surrounding the building -- obscuring the grand entrance from view. Then in late 2004, the partitions disappeared and a beautiful new façade, designed by Polshek Partnership Architects was revealed, providing a much more accessible and welcoming entrance to this historical museum.

art6My favorite places to visit in the museum are the re-constructed historical homes where you can see what residential life might have been like a century ago. In some cases, modest family homes that are little more than wood cabins that feature small rooms with knobby wooden floors and dark interiors. But in other cases, extremely ornate decors are featured, illustrating the creativity and opulence of early interior design in America, such as the Moorish Smoking Room from the Worsham-Rockefeller House that features an exotic design from the early 1880s.

Always a treat, the Brooklyn Museum offers new pleasures and familiar favorite spots on every visit.

You’ve heard from our team. Now tell us which exhibitions excite you!

We were intimately involved with this year’s IIDA Hospitality Forum, as
Nancy Jackson, President, Architectural Systems moderated the event
for the second year in a row. She hosted an esteemed panel during the
BDNY show in New York. The panel and forum co-chairs are pictured

Randall Stone, Senior Partner & Dir of Customer Experience, Lippincott

Nancy Jackson, President Architectural Systems, Moderator & Forum Co-Chair
Matt Turner, Editor, Sleeper magazine

Bruno Viterbo, Managing Director, Champalimaud, Forum Co-Chair

Matoula Karagiannis, Design Manager, Global Design, Wyndham Hotels

Tony Machado, Senior Associate, BBG-BBGM

Together, they discussed hotel guest experience and some of the most
outrageously effective (and ineffective) ideas in front of a group of more
than 100 attendees.

BOFFO Building Fashion -- Materialista® Mixes & Mingles with Fashionistas!

Interior

I can’t believe Fall Fashion Week has already come and gone!!!

While it’s always my favorite time to be in New York, this year was especially thrilling because I got to attend the party celebrating the opening of the new pop-up shop of Nicola Formacetti.

 nnn

Even if you're not one of his 91,472 Twitter followers, you probably already know that Nicola is the creative director for Thierry Mugler as well as being Lady Gaga’s fashion director, and now I know where her wild and fashion-forward style comes from! Nicola branded all of the party-goers with Panda stamps -- to go along with his "little Panda" persona

fab

Not only did I get to hob-nob with the coolest fashionistas in the city and the most cutting-edge architects and designers, it was also a very special Materialista event because the amazing reflective material Architectural Systems supplied was everywhere!

The incredible stage set 'reflecting' Nicola’s point of view was designed by Mark Foster Gage and Marc Clemenceau Bailly who chose ASI’s Ornamental Surfaces material to create what Vogue described as “fractured floor-to-ceiling prism mirrors.” Just be careful if you're wearing a skirt because the floor is mirrored too!!

mmmmmmmmmm

We loved reading some of the great ways the press described this innovative use of the Ornamental Surfaces material ...

In the Architect Newspaper's Fabrikator feature, Gage discussed how the selected material worked with the design concept (and the eye-popping Mugler clothes!) by “dematerializing the fashion into a pattern on the walls.” The article went on to describe the exciting collaboration between them and Architectural Systems...

"Building Fashion material sponsor Architectural Systems consulted with the architects on their concept of a faceted stage—one on which perhaps even Lady Gaga would perform... ASI supplied 200 sheets with three separate performance characteristics: for the floor, for the walls and ceiling." (Read more)

 boffoimage2

In addition to the Architect's Newspaper feature, I loved reading about ASI material in Elle: “… the space is made of broken mirrors, and it’s kind of dizzying to add people into the mix with vintage Versace‘s reflected in a hundred different mirrors.”

And here's the Huffington Post: “Imagine walking inside a disco ball and you get the picture.”

rrrrr

In addition to being a material partner for the event, Architectural Systems is also an event partner for BOFFO NY -- Nicola's pop-up shop is the first of five BOFFO exhibits for the season. (Today's the last day Nicola's shop is on view, but stay tuned for the 2nd installation coming up soon: Irene Neuwirth & TheVeryMany, September 29 – October 12, 2011!)

Partner

Just to give you a little background on BOFFO, ASI is very excited about the opportunity to be involved with an organization that is merging the world of fashion with architecture & design. This is BOFFO NY's second year, and if we can judge by the amazing success of the first exhibit, we can't wait to see where the rest of the season will take us!

For more about Mark Foster Gage and how architectural surfaces like Ornamental Surfaces can combine with emerging technology and new digital fabrication techniques to provide architects with unprecedented out-of-this-world design options like Nicola's shop, check out Mark's new book "Composites, Surfaces, and Software: High Performance Architecture."

And don't forget the next BOFFO exhibit, Irene Neuwirth & TheVeryMany! So excited to be kicking off the fall season with such creative collaborations to come!

WHAT'S NEXT® - Materialista's Dream Hotel

Dream_LobbyI got a chance to tour the new Dream Downtown Hotel in Chelsea for NEWH Hospitality Industry Network’s last Toasty Tuesday event.  On the cool, younger sister of the Dream New York (where ASI Pearl Imagio® and the Perla Mosaic® luxury vinyl tiles were installed in the Ava Lounge!), the perforated metal façade and oversized porthole-shaped windows of this new property really catches the eye!

This is one of the latest projects in the Vikram Chatwal Hotel portfolio, part of Wyndham Hotel Group (ASI supplied the Crystallized Glass Stone at his first project, The Time Hotel too!). Dream is already becoming the latest celebrity hotspot (I read in Life & Style Lindsay Lohan was recently spotted there!).

Dream_PhD

Our own A&D celebrity guest was George Scammel, Vice President, Global Design of Wyndham, joining us for the cocktail portion of the event, hosted in the über-cool rooftop lounge, PH-D. The elevator ride up was itself a visual experience. The mirrored ceilings and pinkish illuminated walls put me in a dream-like state, a nice homage to the hotel’s name. PH-D lounge was wonderfully appointed, combining elements of Miami Beach and Mad Men (one of my favorite AMC TV shows).  The outdoor wrap-around patio featured edgy decor and incredible views of the city, especially at sunset.

Dream_Pool

The most exciting part of the visit for me was checking out the pool area. Called “The Beach”, it’s complete with white-sand and lounging areas, and a bar and restaurant. The Dream Hotel’s pool deck is the perfect way to escape the summer heat. But be careful while taking a dip -- the pool’s glass bottom also serves as a series of skylights for the hotel’s lobby.  So if you don’t want people watching you from the lobby steakhouse, Marble Lane, or snapping paparazzi pics in your bathing suit, you may want to rethink what time of day you go swimming!

DReam_Pool_Bottom

Speaking of the lobby, rich wood wall panels and end grain wood block floors juxtapose beautifully with the brushed metallic fabrics and pops of color.  Make sure to check out the “swing room” by the elevators, where you can revisit your childhood by taking a ride on the huge rope swings that hang from the ceiling. With more restaurants to open in the Fall and amenities like a gift shop, I can’t wait to go back and visit again.

Materialista’s rating? This hotel is dreamy!

What's Now: Summer (Materials) Lovin’

sag_harbor

Boy has this summer been hot!  Luckily, there are so many fun ways to keep cool this summer - the beach, staying inside, or a refreshing treat  One of the best ways to beat the heat is with the help of cold frozen yogurt.

Fortunately, one of the many projects ASI worked on recently is Swirls and Twirls, a new do-it-yourself frozen yogurt shop in Massapequa Park, Long Island, designed by Patrice Auerbach Interiors Ltd. My go-to order is vanilla with graham cracker crumbs and strawberries… yum! And with 16 flavors and 40 toppings to choose from, you’ll never run out of tasty combinations!  And there’s also no reason to feel guilty about indulging – the company gives part of its proceeds to The CASK (Creative Art Space for Kids) Foundation.

Swirls_Twirls

The décor of the shop is a breath of fresh air itself. The alternating panels of our Perla™ Collection in white and turquoise give the counter face a bold,
distinct look reminiscent of sea and sand, while the gold lacquered Sculptured™ panels behind the counter mimic the swirling mounds of yogurt being served up daily.

Gab_RDI

Another fun way to escape the brutal city heat is shopping at any number of NYC’s great department stores.  Not only can you find a great outfit for the beach, but department stores have some of the best A/C around! Recently, our sales team got the chance to check out the newly renovated Lord & Taylor for the Retail Design Institute’s monthly networking event, “Oh my Lord & Taylor” (cute, huh?).

A_R_RDI

Rachel Cooper, VP of Sales; Andrew Cooper, VP of National Accounts, Architectural Systems

Dominick Ponti, Sr. VP of Design, Construction & Facilities for Lord & Taylor, discussed the challenge of creating a modern retail experience while respecting the original aesthetic of one of New York’s historical buildings. He definitely succeeded in his goal.  The new look was modern, yet sophisticated.  I particularly liked the black Porcelain on the cosmetics floor; it felt like a fresh, yet classic touch that really pulled the whole floor together.

Getting out of the city and heading to the beach for a weekend is always a great way to cool down. While I'm excited for a family trip to Sag Harbor in The Hamptons, I’m really hoping to make it down to Miami for some much needed R&R and see the Eden Roc Renaissance Hotel renovation!

Elle_spa

Eden_Roc_Fitness

The fitness center, now complete with ASI Textured Vinyl Flooring in soft beige, has state-of-the-art equipment, and the treatment rooms of the hotel’s Elle Spa feature ASI Wood Vinyl Flooring for a natural, Zen vibe.  I’d also make sure to pop into the spa’s retail boutique to check out the White Oak European Hardwood flooring and pick up their exclusive Essie nail polishes, Eden and Roc.

Elle_retail

Phew… after all of that writing, I’m exhausted.  I think I’ll go take a dip in the pool at the new Dream Downtown Hotel in Chelsea.  Make sure to check back next week to read all about the new hot spot!

What's Now - Choice + Innovation Available with 3M Architectural Market launch at International Contemporary Furniture Fair

3M booth by Mansour Design

3M products are everywhere, and now that we have a strategic alliance with their Architectural Markets, they can be everywhere in your design! The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) was a perfect NY trade show to introduce 3M™ DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes and Fasara™ Glass Finishes.

3M™ Fasara™ Glass Finishes and DI-NOC™ Architectural Finishes

When working the show, it was great to see so many familiar faces from the design community. Everyone knows Architectural Systems for their distinctive materials and everyone knows 3M for their technology, and the excitement around the collaboration was contagious! The booth sparked a lot of interest. It was not only fantastically designed by Mansour Design, who we introduced 3M to, but attendees immediately started thinking of ways they could incorporate the films and our products into their projects. It was wonderful to watch their creative wheels spin!

Metallic films were applied to two patterns of ASI Sculptured™ panels in the eye-catching display and everyone was fascinated by the innovative ways the panels can be used, either as a new concept or to repurpose an existing surface. Ornamental Surfaces were also part of the exhibit, including new mirrored patterns that attracted a lot of attention!
